Warren marks 25 years since September 11 at 10 a.m. Friday, and Town Hall is back to regular hours Tuesday

Friday: 25 years, at a beam from the towers

A thirty foot steel I-beam from the World Trade Center rests between two granite pillars on the grounds of the municipal complex. The township calls it the 9/11 Heroes Memorial. At 10 a.m. Friday, September 11, the Township Committee gathers there for the memorial service, 25 years to the day after the attacks. The notice on the township calendar is one sentence: the committee "invites you to join the community in solemn reflection on September 11, 2026 at 10:00 am at the 9/11 Memorial Monument as we honor those lost, the brave first responders, and the survivors who carry their stories forward."

The monument's own page on the township website describes what you will be standing in front of. Warren was one of many towns in the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey program that let municipalities request a piece of the World Trade Center, and a local artist, Ralph Garafola, designed the monument as a donation to the township, setting the beam between the two pillars. A granite boulder at their foot carries the date, the words "We Will Never Forget," and the count of emergency responders who died that morning: 343 from the New York Fire Department, 23 from the New York Police Department, 37 from the Port Authority Police Department and 8 from emergency medical services. Those four counts add up to 411, and the township's page says the memorial was designed to commemorate those responders specifically.

The notice does not list speakers, a program, or a rain plan, and I could not confirm any of that with Town Hall closed today. The National Weather Service forecast for Friday is sunny with a high near 78, so a rain plan should not be needed. The municipal complex is at 46 Mountain Boulevard at Bardy Road, and the police department is on the same grounds.

Tuesday: Town Hall and both districts reopen

Warren Township offices are closed today for Labor Day and reopen Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., the township said in a notice posted Friday. Friday was also the last day of the summer schedule, so Tuesday is the first day back on regular hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The offices are still at the temporary location, 3 Mountainview Road, that the township moved to in March after the Town Hall building was damaged, as Friday's post set out. Municipal Court sits Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Susie B. Boyce Court Room, 44 Mountain Boulevard, on the township's main calendar.

Warren Township K-8 schools and Watchung Hills Regional High School are closed today and open Tuesday. Watchung Hills lists Tuesday as a Day 4 in its rotation. The K-8 district's first week was two days long, as the August 31 week ahead explained, so Tuesday starts its first full week. Angelo L. Tomaso and Woodland hold picture day Wednesday, and Warren Middle School holds its Back to School Night on Thursday.

Warrenbrook Pool, the Somerset County pool at 500 Warrenville Road, is open noon to 6 p.m. today for what the county calls the final weekend of summer. Its page lists no later dates.

Wednesday: one board meets at a new address, and one does not meet

The Board of Health meets Wednesday at 6 p.m. The township calendar flags a location change to 3 Mountain View Road, Suite 100, which is the address of the temporary township offices, while the entry's location field still reads Union Village Conference Room at Town Hall. As of this morning the Agenda Center carries no agenda for the meeting. The board's last posted agenda is from May 6.

The Planning Board's 7:30 p.m. meeting is cancelled. The public notice in the Agenda Center says the next scheduled meeting is "tentatively September 23, 2026," at 7:30 p.m. in the Susie B. Boyce Meeting Room, 44 Mountain Boulevard.

The Warren Senior Citizen Club picnic runs noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Lions Club pavilion behind the municipal building, for residents 55 and older. Tickets were $5 and were sold through September 2 only, with none at the door, as the township's notice said last week.

Wednesday is also the warmest day of the week in the forecast, mostly sunny with a high near 85.

Thursday: recycling, a walk with the deputy mayor, and football under a chance of showers

Curbside recycling runs Thursday. Warren's pickup is every other Thursday through Somerset County, and the following one is September 24.

At 10:15 a.m. Deputy Mayor Vanessa Kian leads the first of the Mayors Wellness Campaign's September walks at East County Park, meeting near the information kiosk. The township's notice says to bring your dog. The series continues September 17 at 6 p.m. with Committeeman Daniel McCarey, September 19 at 8:30 a.m. as a trail cleanup at Glenhurst Meadows, and September 25 with Mayor Shaun Fine, whose walk the notice lists at 6 p.m. and the township calendar lists at 10:15 a.m.

The Open Space Advisory Committee meets at 6:30 p.m. The calendar entry's title says the meeting has moved to the library conference room, at 42 Mountain Boulevard, while its location field still reads Town Hall, Union Village Conference Room. Check before you go. No agenda was posted as of this morning. The committee's last posted agenda is from August 24.

At 7 p.m. Watchung Hills hosts Montgomery in football at 108 Stirling Road. The Warriors are 1 and 1. They opened with a 14 to 0 win at South Brunswick on August 28, covered here on September 1, then lost the home opener to Union 15 to 12 on Friday night, according to the MaxPreps schedule. Their next game after Montgomery is at Somerville on September 18. If you are coming up Stirling Road from the south, the county bridge between Community Place and Dillon Court is still closed for replacement, and the posted detour is Mountain Avenue and Hillcrest Road.

The forecast gives Thursday a 50 percent chance of showers after 2 p.m. and a high near 84, then a 30 percent chance of showers before 8 p.m. It is the only day of the week with rain in the forecast.

Saturday: the Mini Dump opens, and it takes checks only

The Mini Dump at the Public Works garage, 1 Bardy Road, opens Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the first of the four dates in the township's notice. The others are September 26, October 10 and October 24. It is for Warren residents only, for bulk household items such as old furniture and oversized junk. The township's notice, posted Friday, sets out the fees and the rules that the calendar entry does not.

No cash is accepted. Bring a check made out to the Township of Warren and leave the amount blank until a township employee fills it in. Follow the one way signs in and out.

Clean white foam is accepted for recycling, the year round program reported here in July. Egg cartons, dark colored foam, unwashed food service foam, foam glued to cardboard, wet foam, foam wrapped in plastic and paper packing peanuts are not. The notice's list of what the Mini Dump will not take is long: air conditioners, aluminum, asphalt roofing shingles, cardboard, concrete or brick, glass, newspaper, paint cans, propane tanks, plastic, refrigerators, tin plated steel cans, yard waste and food waste, and every kind of electronics it names, from computers and monitors to televisions, printers, copiers and fax machines.

Saturday's forecast is sunny with a high near 79.

Tonight: a listing with no agenda behind it

The township calendar still lists a Board of Adjustment meeting for tonight at 7 p.m. in the Susie B. Boyce Court Room, on the day Town Hall is closed. Friday's post flagged it, and nothing has changed since. As of this morning the Agenda Center carries no agenda for tonight and no cancellation notice. The board's most recent posted agenda is for August 3. The Warren calendar on this site records the board's next meeting as Monday, October 5, with no September date. With Town Hall closed today there was no one to ask, so this post does not assume either way. If the board meets, an agenda should appear in the Agenda Center first.

Roads

The most recent Warren Township Police alert this morning is still the one reported here Thursday: Mountain Avenue closed westbound between Dahlia Drive and King George Road for utility repairs. No reopening has been posted. The department posts closures as they open and rarely posts the reopening, so the absence of a follow up does not mean the road is still shut. It means nobody has said.

The Stirling Road bridge between Community Place and Dillon Court, closed by Somerset County on August 3 for a full replacement, is a separate project that the county describes as about five months of work. The National Weather Service point forecast for Warren, updated at 4:09 a.m. today, carries no watches or warnings.

The forecast page gives no overnight lows for Friday through Sunday.

Later in September

Watchung Hills' Board of Education meets Tuesday, September 15, executive session at 7 p.m. and public session at 7:30 p.m., in the school's Learning Commons. The Environmental Commission meets Wednesday, September 16 at 7 p.m. in the Susie B. Boyce Court Room, the same night Angelo L. Tomaso holds its Back to School Night. The Historic Sites Committee meets Thursday, September 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Wagner Farm, per the township calendar.

Wagner Farm Arboretum, 197 Mountain Avenue, hosts NASA International Observe the Moon Night on Friday, September 18 from 7:30 to 10 p.m., free with advance registration through the arboretum, which lists 25 astronomers and more than 50 telescopes and a rain date of September 19. The arboretum's first Harvest Festival and Artisan Market follows on Saturday, September 26, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., free admission, rain or shine, and it is now on the arboretum's own events page as well as the township calendar. Both districts close Monday, September 21 for Yom Kippur.

The Township Committee's next meeting is Thursday, September 24 at 7 p.m. Two ordinances are listed on the township's Ordinances Pending Adoption page, both given first reading on August 20 according to the township's own highlights of that meeting: Ordinance 26-23, a $1,400,000 bond ordinance for the acquisition of property at Round Top, and Ordinance 26-24, which vacates a portion of San Road and a drainage easement at The Hollows at Warren. The township's document links for both would not open for me, so nothing beyond their titles is reported here, and the same highlights list a Resolution 26-207 described as a framework for a proposed 100 percent affordable housing project of at least 32 supportive needs units. That resolution deserves its own post once its text is available. The full run of dates is on the Warren calendar, and the ordinances will be tracked on the zoning and development page once adopted.

The community vaccine clinic on Wednesday, September 30 has two different times in two township sources. The township's notice says 3 to 6 p.m. at the Warren Township Courthouse, 46 Mountain Boulevard. The township's main calendar lists a Flu Clinic the same day from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Susie B. Boyce Court Room, which is the same building. Pre-registration is requested. A second clinic follows October 21.
