Watchung Hills football opened the 2026 season on the road at South Brunswick on Friday, August 28, and won 14-0. The Warriors are 1-0. The home opener is Friday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m. against Union, at the high school on Stirling Road. Four other fall teams are already in their schedules: boys soccer, girls soccer, field hockey and volleyball. Watchung Hills has been in class since August 26, so the season is a week old before Warren K-8 opens on Wednesday, September 2.
By the time Warren Township's youngest students walk into their first day on Wednesday, the high school will have played six varsity games. Watchung Hills Regional opened classes on August 26, and its fall teams started before that. Football went to South Brunswick on Friday night, August 28, and came home with a 14-0 shutout.
That is the whole scoring record so far. Two touchdowns, no answer from South Brunswick. The Warriors are 1-0, and the first home crowd of the year gets Union on Friday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m.
Whose team this is
Watchung Hills Regional High School serves three member municipalities, the ones that levy taxes for the district: Warren Township, Watchung Borough and Long Hill Township. Green Brook sends students to the school on tuition and is not a member district. So roughly speaking, a Friday night crowd on Stirling Road is drawn from three towns, and Warren is the largest of them. Three things. First, the two football sources do not fully agree: High School On SI lists a Phillipsburg game on the Warriors' 2026 slate that the MaxPreps schedule page did not display when I read it, so treat the football schedule below the Montgomery game as incomplete rather than settled. Second, girls soccer and volleyball each have August dates on their schedules with no result attached, which usually means the score has not been entered yet. I am not going to guess at them. Third, I could not open the official Watchung Hills athletics site or ArbiterLive, so none of this is confirmed against the school's own posted schedule. If a time matters to you, check the gate.
The two calendars, again
Warren households with children in both districts have been running on two calendars since August 25. That gap closes tomorrow. Warren Township's K-8 schools open Wednesday, September 2, then close Friday, September 4 and again Monday, September 7 for Labor Day. The full year for both districts is laid out in two different first days of school, and every dated item is on the Warren calendar.
One scheduling note worth having: Friday, September 4 is a day off for Warren K-8 and a home football night at the high school. If you have younger children at home and want to take them to a game, that is the one on the calendar with no school the next morning to worry about.
What I am watching
A 14-0 opener says the defense traveled well. It does not say much else yet, and one game against one opponent is not a season. The schedule gets harder in late September with Somerville and Hunterdon Central back to back on the road. Last spring the baseball team won the county title 1-0 in eight innings, which is roughly the same story told with a bat. This is a program that wins low scoring games.
