Warren K-8 gets two days of school this week, then a four day weekend
Warren Township K-8 opens Wednesday, September 2, then closes Friday and again for Labor Day. Two days of class in week one, and a board meeting tonight at 6:30.
This story updates the school decisions tracker, the running file that carries the current status.
Warren Township's K-8 schools open Wednesday, September 2, close Friday, September 4, and close again Monday, September 7 for Labor Day. That is two days of class in the first week, then four days off. Tonight, Monday, August 31, the K-8 Board of Education meets at 6:30 p.m. at Warren Middle School, 100 Old Stirling Road, on a day when the buildings are closed to students for staff development. One township police road alert is still open with no stated end date, on Reinman Road westbound at Stirling Road, and the county's Stirling Road bridge has been closed since August 3. Friday is the last day of township summer hours.

Tonight the school board meets in an empty building
The K-8 Board of Education has an agenda posted for tonight, August 31. The board's own schedule puts every 2026 regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Middle School, which is 100 Old Stirling Road and not the board office at 213 Mount Horeb Road. After tonight the next regular meeting is September 28.
The building is closed to students today. The district calendar marks both today and tomorrow as staff development days, so the teachers are in and the children are not. If you have been following the K-8 enrollment question, this is the first board meeting since the district laid out its growth planning, and it is the meeting where the year's committee assignments and opening reports normally land.
The agenda is published as a PDF on the board's agenda page. I could not read it, so I am not going to tell you what is on it.
The first week of school is two days long
Here is the K-8 calendar, straight from the district, for the next eight days.
| Date | Warren Township K-8 | What else is on that day |
|---|---|---|
| Monday, Aug 31 | Closed to students, staff development | Board of Education meeting, 6:30 p.m., Warren Middle School |
| Tuesday, Sep 1 | Closed to students, staff development | Kindergarten play date 3:30 p.m. and a walk through at Angelo L. Tomaso. Sixth grade orientation 1:30 p.m. at the Middle School |
| Wednesday, Sep 2 | First day of school | Nothing else posted |
| Thursday, Sep 3 | School day | Nothing else posted |
| Friday, Sep 4 | Closed | Last day of township summer hours |
| Saturday, Sep 5 | Weekend | Warren Labor Day 5K, 9:00 a.m., Watchung Hills Pop Warner Complex |
| Monday, Sep 7 | Closed, Labor Day | Township offices closed. Watchung Hills closed |
Two days, then four days off. If you are arranging childcare around the start of the year, that is the shape of it, and the calendar does not settle back into a normal five day week until September 8.
Watchung Hills Regional is on a different clock and always has been. The high school opened August 26 and is already into its second full week. That gap between the two districts is the subject of a piece I wrote earlier this month, and it is why some Warren households have had a high schooler out the door for a week while the younger children are still home.
One road alert is still open
Warren Township Police publish road and utility notices through Nixle. Three have gone out since last Monday's roundup. Two of them carried an end time and have passed. One did not.
| Posted | Where | What it said | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday, Aug 27 | Trinity Place | Ongoing utility work, residents may have no water pressure or reduced pressure until approximately 8 p.m. | End time passed |
| Monday, Aug 24 | Reinman Road | Closed westbound at Stirling Road, unknown duration, due to road work | No end date given |
| Monday, Aug 24 | Round Top Road | Northbound closed at Fox Hill Drive for utility work until approximately 5 p.m. | End time passed |
The Reinman Road notice is the one to plan around. It went out a week ago today with no duration attached, and nothing since has cancelled it. That is the same corridor where the water main broke in late August, and the police feed has not said whether the road work and the main repairs are the same job. I tried the township website three times this morning to see whether the closure had been lifted and it would not load, for the reason set out below.
Separately, Somerset County still lists the Stirling Road bridge, structure L1014, as closed for construction since August 3. That is a county project, not a township one, and it has no posted reopening date. It is on the list in the 2026 roads rundown.
The rest of the week
Friday, September 4 is the last day of township summer hours. Regular office hours resume after Labor Day, and the offices are still at the temporary location, 3 Mountainview Road.
Saturday, September 5 brings the Warren Labor Day 5K at 9:00 a.m. at the Watchung Hills Pop Warner Complex, a run and walk built around the country's 250th anniversary with a course through East County Reserve. Registration runs through runsignup.com.
Curbside recycling collection is Thursday, September 10, which is outside this window but worth putting on the fridge now given the holiday.
Everything above is on the Warren calendar, which I keep current as things are confirmed.
I could not open warrennj.org this morning, which happens intermittently, so I did not re-read the township calendar, the news flash feed, the agenda center or the recreation page today. The township summer hours date, the temporary office address and the Labor Day 5K details are carried forward from the Warren, Local. calendar, where they were confirmed from township sources earlier in August. If any of them has changed since, I would not know it yet. I also could not read tonight's Board of Education agenda, which is posted only as a PDF, and the county library's event calendar showed no listings when I checked. Finally, the police alert feed shows relative ages rather than timestamps, so the posting dates in the road table are worked back from the ages shown on the feed at about 6 a.m. Monday.
