Mountain Avenue is closed westbound between Dahlia Drive and King George Road
Warren police posted the utility closure Wednesday morning and have not posted a reopening. It sits about two miles west of the Stirling Road bridge work.
Mountain Avenue is closed westbound between Dahlia Drive and King George Road for utility repairs. Warren Township Police posted the closure Wednesday morning and had not posted a reopening as of 6 a.m. Thursday. Eastbound traffic is not mentioned in the alert. The closed stretch runs past Fairview at Warren in the Mount Bethel section and ends where Mountain Avenue meets King George Road, County Route 651, just south of the Interstate 78 interchange at Exit 36. It sits about two miles west of the Stirling Road bridge closure, so it does not fall on the county detour for that work.
What the alert says
The record is one line from Warren Township Police, published through Nixle: "Mountain Ave is closed Westbound from Dahlia Drive to King George Road for utility repairs." That is the whole notice. It does not name the utility, give a detour, set an end time, or say whether the eastbound lane stays open. Several earlier Warren closure alerts this summer carried an expected reopening hour. This one does not.
The department posted a second utility notice last Friday, telling residents near Trinity Place to expect no water pressure or reduced water pressure until about 8 p.m. that evening. Trinity Place is on the far west side of Warren and is not connected to the Mountain Avenue work by anything in the record.
Where the closed stretch sits
Mountain Avenue runs most of the width of Warren. The closed piece is at its western end, in Mount Bethel. Going west from Dahlia Drive, the road passes the Fairview at Warren townhouses, crosses under Interstate 78 and meets King George Road a short distance south of the Exit 36 interchange. Wagner Farm Arboretum, at 197 Mountain Avenue, is about half a mile northeast of the closure and is reached from the other direction.
If you normally take Mountain Avenue westbound to reach Exit 36 or King George Road, that is the movement the alert closes. Mount Bethel Road and Mountain Boulevard both connect the same area and are not named in any current alert.
The Stirling Road bridge is a separate closure
Somerset County closed Stirling Road at County Bridge L1014, between Community Place and Dillon Court, at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, August 3, for a full bridge replacement. The county's project page describes the work as approximately five months from that closure. Driveway access is maintained. No vehicles and no pedestrians are permitted on the bridge itself.
The posted detours are unchanged. General traffic is routed on Mountain Avenue, County Route 622, and Hillcrest Road, County Route 531. Vehicles over four tons go by Valley Road, King George Road, Mount Bethel Road and Mountain Boulevard. Those detours use the eastern end of Mountain Avenue, roughly two miles from the stretch closed this week, so the bridge detour is intact.
One thing has moved. On August 17 this site reported a mid December reopening for the bridge. The county page now describes the job as about five months from August 3, which points past mid December toward the turn of the year. If you are planning around the bridge, the five month figure is the county's current wording.
The rest of the road work
The Reinman Road water main break, the second break on Sandlewood Drive and the Round Top Road utility closure at Fox Hill Drive were covered here on August 24. Those alerts are still in the department's log. None of them carries a follow up notice saying the work finished, which is normal for this feed. Warren Township Police post closures as they open and rarely post the reopening.
This week, if you are driving children
The Warren Township K through 8 district started Wednesday, September 2. Its schools are closed Friday, September 4, and again Monday, September 7 for Labor Day, so the first week is two days long, as the week ahead set out on August 31. Watchung Hills Regional High School, whose member municipalities are Warren Township, Watchung Borough and Long Hill Township, has been in session since August 26 and follows the same Labor Day closure. The alert does not name the utility, give a completion time, or say how many households are affected, and I could not confirm any of that from another public source Thursday morning. The police alert log stamps items by elapsed time rather than by clock date, so the days above are given as days and not as exact hours. The township website would not load for me this morning, so I have not read the Agenda Center or the press release the township posted on September 1, which is listed on its news page under that date and nothing more. Whether the Mountain Avenue work is part of the same water main program as the Reinman Road and Sandlewood Drive breaks is unconfirmed, and this post will not guess.
