Warren week ahead: seven police road alerts in ten days, and school starts Wednesday
Seven Warren police road alerts in ten days, three naming water mains. Tax grace period ends today. Watchung Hills opens Wednesday.
This story updates the school decisions tracker, the running file that carries the current status.
The Warren Township Police Department has posted seven road and utility alerts in the ten days since August 15, and three of them name water mains directly. As of about 7 a.m. Monday, Round Top Road northbound is closed at Fox Hill Drive for utility work until roughly 5 p.m., and repairs from the Reinman Road main break were still described as ongoing on Friday. Two deadlines and one first day sit on top of that. Third quarter property taxes lose their grace period today, August 24, with interest charged back to August 1. Watchung Hills Regional opens Wednesday, August 26, a full day for all students. Warren Township K-8 does not open until September 2.
The roads come first this week
Warren has had a bad ten days underground. Counting back from Monday morning, the township police alert feed carries seven road and utility notices since August 15. Three of them name a water main. Two more are titled only Road Closure, with no detail published, so I cannot tell you what caused them.
Here is the run, most recent first.
| Posted | Alert | What it said |
|---|---|---|
| Monday, Aug 24 | Round Top Road | Northbound closed at Fox Hill Drive for utility work until approximately 5 p.m. Follow the posted detour. |
| Friday, Aug 21 | Sandlewood Drive | Water main break. Reduced service and traffic in the area. Repairs from the Reinman Road break still ongoing. |
| Friday, Aug 21 | Reinman Road | Road closures in the area of Old Stirling Road due to ongoing work. Follow posted detours. |
| Thursday, Aug 20 | Road closure | Title only. No location published in the feed. |
| Thursday, Aug 20 | Morning Glory Road | Closure. Detail not published in the feed. |
| Wednesday, Aug 19 | Tree down with wires | Detail not published in the feed. |
| Saturday, Aug 15 | Water main breaks | Two separate breaks near Chesterfield Drive and Woods Road. |
The August 15 pair near Chesterfield Drive and Woods Road is the one last week's edition covered. What has changed since is that the trouble moved. Reinman Road, Sandlewood Drive and Round Top Road are not the same neighborhood, and the Reinman repair has now been open long enough to be described as ongoing nine days after the first break.
One practical note. Friday's Sandlewood alert is a break, and a break means a pressure loss for some houses while crews work. The township police feed did not report a boil water advisory at any point in this run, and none is posted. If one is ever issued it comes from the water utility, not from the police feed.
Friday's township Wellness Walk starts at 9:15 a.m. at the East County Park gazebo, 40 Reinman Road. That is the same road carrying closures near Old Stirling Road. If you are driving to it, check the police feed that morning rather than assuming the usual approach is open.
Today is the tax deadline, and the interest is back dated
Third quarter property taxes were payable August 1. Resolution 2026-200, adopted by the Township Committee on July 16, extended the grace period to today, Monday August 24, because certification of the tax rate by the County Tax Board ran late and pushed the bills out late with it.
The part worth repeating is how the interest works. Paying on August 25 does not cost you one day of interest. Interest accrues back to August 1, so it costs you twenty five. The resolution and the statute behind it are covered in full in the July post. The township's online portal stays open until 10 p.m. tonight.
Two first days, a week apart
Warren families with children in both districts get two separate first days again this year, and the gap is a full week.
| District | First day | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Watchung Hills Regional | Wednesday, Aug 26 | Full day for all students. Staff development August 24 and 25. |
| Warren Township K-8 | Wednesday, Sept 2 | Staff development August 31 and September 1. Schools closed September 4. |
Watchung Hills Regional is the shared high school for Warren Township, Watchung Borough and Long Hill Township, the three municipalities that levy taxes for it. Green Brook sends students on tuition and is not a member district. The full breakdown of both calendars is in the earlier piece on the two first days.
What that means practically: Wednesday morning is the first heavy school traffic on Warren roads since June, and it lands on the same day the Planning Board meets and while the utility work is still open.
On the calendar, August 24 to 30
| Day | Item | Time and place |
|---|---|---|
| Monday, Aug 24 | Third quarter tax grace period ends | Online portal open until 10 p.m. |
| Wednesday, Aug 26 | First day of school, Watchung Hills Regional | 108 Stirling Road |
| Wednesday, Aug 26 | Planning Board meeting | 7:30 p.m., Susie B. Boyce Court Room, 44 Mountain Boulevard |
| Thursday, Aug 27 | Curbside recycling collection | Material out the night before |
| Friday, Aug 28 | August Wellness Walk, dog edition | 9:15 a.m., East County Park gazebo, 40 Reinman Road |
Running underneath all of it: Stirling Road stays closed at the Stony Brook bridge. Somerset County closed Bridge L1014 on August 3 to start construction, and the closure runs into December. Township meetings are held in the Susie B. Boyce Court Room at 44 Mountain Boulevard, not at the temporary administrative offices on Mountainview Road.
Next week, so you can plan
- Monday, August 31. Warren Township K-8 Board of Education meets at 6:30 p.m. Schools are closed for staff development.
- Tuesday, September 1. Second K-8 staff development day.
- Wednesday, September 2. First day of school, Warren Township K-8.
- Friday, September 4. Last day of township summer hours, and K-8 schools closed.
- Saturday, September 5. Warren Labor Day 5K, 9 a.m., Watchung Hills Pop Warner Complex.
I could not open the township website, warrennj.org, today, so I have not read the Agenda Center, the pending ordinances list or the civic alerts page. That means I cannot tell you what is on Wednesday's Planning Board agenda, or whether an agenda has been posted at all. The meeting date and time come from the township's published board schedule. Check warrennj.org/AgendaCenter before Wednesday evening if you plan to attend or speak.
The police alert feed publishes relative ages rather than timestamps, so the posting days in the table above are derived from those ages read Monday morning. The August 15 entry cross checks against last week's reporting of the same alert, which is why I trust the method, but treat the clock times as approximate. Two alerts carry titles only, with no location or cause published, so I have reported them as unknown rather than guessing.
Author's note
Seven alerts in ten days is a number worth watching rather than a number worth alarm. Warren has an aging distribution system and August heat moves pipe, which is why breaks cluster in late summer. What I would want to know, and what the record does not tell me, is whether these are independent failures or one stressed segment of main. Nothing in the police feed answers that, and the water utility has published nothing about this run. If the Township Committee takes it up, that is worth a hearing.
