Warren, Local. week ahead card: open space survey closes Friday, Revolution talk Tuesday, Columbus Day closures
RecordThe primary document, reported. What the labels mean

Alan Siegel, president of the Warren Historical Society, has a new book about Warren in the American Revolution, and on Tuesday night he brings it home: the Continental Army's artillery rolling along what is now Mountain Boulevard on its way to Yorktown, the signal beacons on Mount Bethel and near Morning Glory, and the 50 local militiamen who served. It is one of the quieter items on a short week that ends with Town Hall and both school districts closed for Columbus Day. The item with a deadline is the township's open space survey, which closes Friday.

The short answer

The Open Space Advisory Committee's five minute survey on how you use Warren's parks, fields and trails closes Friday, October 9, and the township says the answers will shape its Open Space and Recreation Plan for the next ten years. The Zoning Board of Adjustment meets tonight at 7 p.m. in the Susie B. Boyce Court Room, 44 Mountain Boulevard. Alan Siegel's talk on Warren in the American Revolution is Tuesday evening. Curbside recycling runs Thursday, Watchung Hills dismisses early Friday for the PSAT, and the Mini Dump opens Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Town Hall is closed Monday, October 12, and neither district holds classes that day.

Through Friday: the survey that feeds the next ten year plan

The Open Space Advisory Committee posted the survey on September 25. It asks how you use Warren's parks, athletic fields, trails and open space, and what should come next. The township's notice says it takes about five minutes, that the answers "will directly shape" the Open Space and Recreation Plan for the next decade, and asks that it be completed by October 9. It is at surveymonkey.com/r/WarrenOS.

The timing is not abstract. On September 24 the Township Committee adopted Ordinance 26-23, the $1,400,000 bond ordinance behind the purchase of the Round Top Swim and Tennis Club on Mount Horeb Road, reported here on September 28. What the township does with land like that is the kind of question an open space plan answers. The Open Space Advisory Committee meets next on Monday, October 19 at 6:30 p.m., and the township calendar says that meeting has moved to the library conference room.

Monday: a walk this morning, the Zoning Board tonight

The Mayor's Wellness Campaign starts its October walks at 10:15 a.m. today at East County Park, near the information kiosk, with BirthUp, a group the township's notice says will talk about maternal care. Four more walks follow this month, the next on Thursday, October 15 on the Codington Trail with Open Space chair Bill Gilbert.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment meets at 7 p.m. in the Susie B. Boyce Court Room. It skipped September, and its last posted agenda before this one was August 3. Tonight's agenda lists the board's 2025 annual report and a resolution for BA 26-04, H & G Innovations, LLC. I could read only the first page of the two page agenda, so any applications listed below that line are not reported here. Earlier in the evening the township calendar lists a Middlebrook Regional Commission meeting at 6 p.m. at 3 Mountainview Road, Suite 100, where the township offices have been since March.

Tuesday: court, then the Revolution

Municipal Court sits from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Susie B. Boyce Court Room.

In the evening, Alan Siegel discusses his new publication, The Spirit of Liberty. The Somerset County Library System lists the talk from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Warren Township branch, 42 Mountain Boulevard, with registration through the library's event page, and describes Siegel as the author of ten books on state and local history. The township calendar lists the same program from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Susie B. Boyce Court Room next door. I could not reconcile the two listings, so register through the library and check the room when you arrive. Warren also takes part in Somerset County's Journey Through the Past heritage weekend on October 10 and 11, under Resolution 2026-247, which was on the September 24 Committee agenda.

Wednesday and Thursday: back to school night, and a webinar series begins

Central School's PTO holds a bingo night Wednesday, and Woodland School has a BMX show assembly, per the district calendar. The Warren Township Fire Department meets at 7:30 p.m. in the court room.

Curbside recycling runs Thursday. The next pickup after that is October 22.

Watchung Hills Regional High School holds Back to School Night Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. The same hour, the Mayor's Wellness Campaign begins a free Alzheimer's Association webinar series, Thursdays in October from 7 to 8 p.m.: Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia on October 8, 10 Warning Signs on October 15, Communicating Effectively on October 22 and Building Brain Healthy Habits on October 29. The township's October 2 notice says the sessions will not be recorded. Registration is through the link in that notice, and questions go to fchs@somersetcountynj.gov.

Friday: the survey closes, the PSAT, and a home game

Friday is the last day for the open space survey. Watchung Hills dismisses students and faculty early for PSAT day, which covers 10th and 11th graders, and seniors take their class picture at 9:45 a.m. at Tozier Stadium, per the high school calendar.

The Warriors play North Hunterdon at home Friday at 7 p.m. MaxPreps has them at 2 and 3 after a 21 to 19 win at Hunterdon Central on September 25. The October 2 game at Summit had no result posted on MaxPreps this morning.

Saturday and Sunday: the Mini Dump and a heritage weekend

The Mini Dump at the Public Works garage, 1 Bardy Road, is open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the third of its four fall dates, with the last on October 24. Residents only, checks only: $20 a car, $25 an SUV, $40 a small van or pickup, $60 a full size van, $80 a full size pickup. Clean white foam is accepted. What it will not take is in the September 7 week ahead.

Somerset County's Journey Through the Past runs Saturday and Sunday. The Angelo L. Tomaso PTO holds its fall family portrait fundraiser both days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. And the township's highlights of the September 24 meeting note an Oktoberfest at Forest Lodge on Saturday, after Anthony Panchery of Forest Lodge joined the Committee for its Local Places, Local Faces segment.

Next Monday: Columbus Day

Town Hall is closed Monday, October 12, per the township calendar. Warren Township K-8 schools are closed for staff development, and Watchung Hills is closed for students. The Watchung Hills Board of Education holds a public work session Tuesday, October 13, and the Planning Board meets Wednesday, October 14 at 7:30 p.m. Both are on the Warren calendar.

What the Committee did on September 24

The township posted its highlights of the September 24 Township Committee meeting on Thursday. Besides adopting Ordinance 26-23 for the Round Top purchase and Ordinance 26-24, which vacates an easement on a portion of San Road, the highlights list Resolution 2026-236, the township's application to the state Department of Community Affairs Resilient Communities Program. That is the Maxwell Court and Cherry Tree Lane drainage project, estimated at $3,500,000, whose public hearing was previewed here on September 21.

The Committee also recognized Congressman Kean's award winners from Warren: William Sundberg as a Senior of Distinction and Diva Vats for an honorable mention in the essay contest. It proclaimed September 7 World Duchenne Awareness Day and marked business milestones for The Learning Experience, which has served Warren for more than 20 years, and TD Bank. The Committee meets next Thursday, October 22 at 7 p.m.

Roads

Warren Township Police posted at 8:27 a.m. Thursday, October 1 that Public Works crews would be working on Mountain Avenue between Saw Mill Road and Cory Brook Road, with traffic alternating and minor delays. The alert gave no end date. An alert the day before closed Old Stirling Road between Reinman Road and Sandalwood for utility work until 2 p.m. that afternoon. The Stirling Road bridge between Community Place and Dillon Court, which Somerset County closed on August 3 for a replacement it described as about five months of work, has no reopening notice. Detours and the paving list are on the Warren roads page.

What I could not verify

The rest of tonight's Zoning Board agenda: I could read only its first page, so the applications it lists, if any, and what BA 26-04 concerns are not reported here. When and where Tuesday's Revolution talk starts, which the library lists at 6:30 p.m. at the branch and the township calendar at 6 p.m. in the court room. How long the Mountain Avenue work between Saw Mill Road and Cory Brook Road runs, since the police alert gave no end date. The result of the October 2 Watchung Hills game at Summit. Library programs beyond Tuesday's talk, because I could not get the library's event listings to load. Corrections are welcome at john@nexthomepremier.com.
