RecordThe primary document, reported. [What the labels mean](https://blog.johnmangini.com/editorial-standards/)

Tuesday, October 13, is the last day to register to vote in New Jersey's November 3 general election, the one that puts the [nonbinding Hofheimer House question](https://blog.johnmangini.com/hofheimer-house-ballot-question/) on the Warren ballot. The state Division of Elections lists it with the other key dates, and early voting opens Saturday, October 24\. The week starts with Town Hall and both school districts closed for Columbus Day, then picks up with a Watchung Hills board meeting Tuesday, the Planning Board Wednesday and a household hazardous waste day in Hillsborough Saturday.

The short answer

Town Hall is closed today, Monday, October 12, for Columbus Day, and neither school district holds classes. The voter registration deadline for the November 3 election is Tuesday, October 13\. The Watchung Hills Board of Education meets Tuesday at 7 p.m., public session 7:30 p.m. The Planning Board meets Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Susie B. Boyce Court Room, 44 Mountain Boulevard. Somerset County's hazardous waste drop off runs Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Hillsborough. There is no curbside recycling pickup this week. The next one is Thursday, October 22.

## Monday: Columbus Day

The township posted a notice that its offices are closed today for Columbus Day. Warren Township K-8 schools are closed for staff development, per the district's calendar, and Watchung Hills Regional High School is closed for students. The National Weather Service gives Warren a chance of early showers before 7 a.m., then gradual sun and a high near 73.

## Tuesday: the registration deadline, and the high school board

If you are not registered at your current Warren address, Tuesday is the cutoff for November 3\. The Division of Elections' voter information portal lists three more dates after it: early voting from October 24 through November 1, October 27 as the last day to apply for a mail-in ballot by mail, and November 2 at 3 p.m. as the last day to apply for one in person at the county clerk's office. You can check your registration and register online through the state portal linked in the sources.

The Watchung Hills Regional High School Board of Education meets Tuesday, with an executive session at 7 p.m. and the public session at 7:30 p.m. in the Learning Commons, per the high school's calendar. Warren is one of the three member municipalities that levy taxes for the regional district, with Watchung and Long Hill. I could not find the agenda posted before publishing. The Warren K-8 board does not meet this week. Its next meeting is Monday, October 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Warren Middle School, with a Zoom option, per the district's site.

## Wednesday: the Planning Board

The Planning Board meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Susie B. Boyce Court Room. The date comes from the board's September 23 agenda, which listed it as the next meeting. I could not locate the October 14 agenda before publishing, so the applications it will hear are not reported here. Land use items that reach the board are tracked on the [zoning and development page](https://blog.johnmangini.com/warren-zoning-and-development/). The Library Advisory Board meets the same evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., per the township calendar.

At the high school, underclass and faculty picture makeups run all day in the South Auditorium.

## Thursday: a trail walk and the second webinar

The Mayor's Wellness Campaign walk at 10:15 a.m. moves to the Codington Trail with Open Space chair Bill Gilbert. The township's notice warns of rocky terrain. In the evening the free Alzheimer's Association webinar series continues from 7 to 8 p.m. with 10 Warning Signs. The township says the sessions are not recorded. Registration is through its October 2 notice, and questions go to fchs@somersetcountynj.gov. The Historic Sites Committee meets at 7:30 p.m. at Wagner Farm.

## Friday: rain, then the Warriors at Plainfield

The forecast turns Thursday night: showers are likely after 2 a.m. and into Friday, with a 60 percent chance, mainly before 2 p.m. MaxPreps lists Watchung Hills football at Plainfield on Friday at 6 p.m. The MaxPreps page I read had not been updated since September 26, so the results of the last three games are not reported here, and you should confirm the kickoff with the school.

## Saturday: hazardous waste, a trail cleanup and tree planting

Somerset County's household hazardous waste drop off runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South County yard, 410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough. It is free for Somerset County residents with proof of residency.

Closer to home, the Warren Township Trail Volunteers clean the Codington Farmstead and Woods trails starting at 8:30 a.m., the same crew that [cleared rocks from the Codington trail](https://blog.johnmangini.com/codington-trail-volunteers/) this summer. Gear is provided. Wear long sleeves, a hat and sturdy shoes, and sign up through the township's Open Space Program page.

Wagner Farm Arboretum, 197 Mountain Avenue, runs its Giving Garden volunteer morning from 9 a.m. to noon, then asks for help planting trees and shrubs in the Children's Garden from 1 to 4 p.m., with October 18 as the rain date. The arboretum's events page says to email Lori Meier at lorim@wfafnj.org to volunteer. Dress for it: the forecast high Saturday is 52, with a low around 36 Saturday night.

## Roads

The Stirling Road bridge between Community Place and Dillon Court remains closed. Somerset County's project page says the replacement, which began in August, is expected to take about five months, and lists the detour for cars as Mountain Avenue and Hillcrest Road, with trucks over 4 tons sent by Valley Road, King George Road, Mount Bethel Road and Mountain Boulevard. The county has not posted a reopening date. Background on the contract is in the [August 20 post](https://blog.johnmangini.com/stirling-road-bridge-contract/).

What I could not verify

I could not read the township website for this piece, so the township's own News Flash items, calendar and agendas from the past week are not reflected here beyond the Columbus Day closing notice, whose title I could confirm. Dates drawn from earlier township notices come from the [Warren calendar](https://blog.johnmangini.com/calendar/), where each was confirmed when it was added. Not confirmed: the agendas for Tuesday's Watchung Hills board meeting and Wednesday's Planning Board meeting, any road alerts posted by Warren police in the past week, the Watchung Hills football results since September 25, and library programs this week, because the library's event listings did not load for me. Corrections are welcome at [john@nexthomepremier.com](mailto:john@nexthomepremier.com).
